Once the Master's degree is obtained, the doctorate is the next step in the academic career. The doctorate attests to the ability to conduct scientific research independently. The habilitation attests to specific abilities to conduct independent research and teaching. At the Faculty of Philology, you can also write your scientific work in the specialised field of translation studies.
Doctorate at Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology
If you are interested in applying for a PhD at the Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology (IALT), please inform yourself first about the Institute's main research areas and the structured PhD programme.
Please send your application for an individual PhD, for the structured PhD programme or for a supervisory agreement by e-mail to the IALT professors.
In order to determine whether your doctoral project can be supervised at IALT, please send us the following documents
- curriculum vitae in table form
- a draft project or, if you do not yet have a thesis topic or project, a detailed justification of your decision to apply for a PhD at IALT
- recommendation or statement from a professor at your home university with whom you have studied or taken examinations
- Copies of your report cards, diplomas and degrees obtained.
- any other proof of language skills
You may submit documents in German, English, French, Portuguese or Spanish. Certified copies and translations will only be requested once you enter the doctoral programme or upon registration.
