Previous Picador Professor Justin Torres has won the National Book Award for Fiction for his novel Blackouts. The judges praised the novel’s “aesthetic complexity, multiplicity, and beauty” as well as its treatment of “the literal, metaphorical, and historical erasures of queer sexuality.”

Justin Torres was the Picador Guest Professor for Literature for the Summer Term 2016. The Picador Guest Professorship team congratulates him on winning this prize.


The Picador Professorship for Literature at the University of Leipzig is unique in Germany. Located at the University’s American Studies Program, it is based on a public-partnership between Holtzbrinck Berlin - Inspire Together, the DAAD, and the University of Leipzig.
