On Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, we are happy to welcome Professor Steve Estes (Sonoma State University, California) for a guest lecture.

Steve Estes is a cultural historian at the Department of History at Sonoma State University, California, and visiting professor at the University of Erfurt. Professor Estes will speak on Everything to Fear: American Culture, Politics, and the War on Terror.

Steve Estes was a recipient of the American Historical Association's Norris & Carol Hundley Award for his groundbreaking history of Black masculinity during the Civil Rights Era, I Am a Man!: Race, Manhood and the Struggle for Civil Rights (University of North Carolina Press, 2005). Apart from the history of race and civil rights, he also specializes in LGBTQ history. His most recent book is a personal history of surfing in the United States, Surfing the South: The Search for Waves and the People Who Ride Them (University of North Carolina Press, 2022).

The guest lecture is part of the Society, History, and Politics III module, which this semester focuses thematically on "Histories of Violence in the United States."
