Dr. Alberto Frasson (Uniwersytet Wrocławski): “Just a phi apart: The syntax of adjectival and adverbial participles in Polish and beyond”
Polish active present participles exhibit a well-known contrast between agreeing (adjectival) and invariant (adverbial) forms. This talk argues that these two forms do not reflect distinct categorial statuses, but instead follow from the internal functional structure of the participial phrase. I propose that all participles contain an aspectual head, but only agreeing participles contain an additional φ-head, which introduces agreement features and participates in case assignment: it agrees with the NP inside its domain and can also interact with higher clause-level probes. Because selection targets the features contributed by this head, verbs and prepositions do not c-select participles as adjectives or nouns, but as constituents bearing particular formal features. Non-agreeing participles simply lack the φ-head and therefore remain invariant. Drawing on additional cross-linguistic evidence from Danish, French, Latvian and Latin, the analysis unifies the distributional patterns of Polish participles, accounts for their morphological variability, and eliminates the need for adjectival recategorization. Participles are thus treated as verbal phrases whose behavior reflects the availability of an extra φ-probe rather than category shifts.

Anastassia Kostrioukova: Book-in-Progress: Visions of Struggle. Evolutionary Imaginary in Russia’s Age of Realism. The Case of “Otechestvennye zapiski.”
In this talk, I will introduce my book-in-progress, which explores the role played by evolutionary discourse – as one dominant epistemological model of the nineteenth century – in the production of various visions of sociality during Russia’s post-Reform transitional period. Relying on the tradition inaugurated by Gillian Beer that considers evolutionary science as distinguished by profound ambivalence, I explore how its semantically elastic discourse came in contact with Russian cultural production at the time when Darwin’s science emerged as an inseparable part of the nineteenth century’s new “sense of the real,” determining “how ‘reality’ could be imagined” and “how stories could be told.” I study this phenomenon in the “thick journal” Notes of the Fatherland after Nikolai Nekrasov acquired its editorial rights from Andrei Kraevsky in 1868 and converted its broad orientation from liberal to progressive. Traces of the evolutionary discourse are scattered throughout the early post-transition issues of OZ, which suggests that it was deeply entangled with social modelling processes in the democratic wing of Russian society in both theoretical and less perceptible manifestations. The journal therefore emerges as a locus of textual activity that makes visible how an imported scientific discourse grounded in foreign ideologies limits, shapes and determines the local logic of social relations, how it is transformed in this process, and further participates in molding desirable visions of sociality. I will discuss how I define the evolutionary discourse at large, how I locate its diverse traces in the specific texts under my investigation, and will illustrate my theoretical underpinnings with a concrete example.

Radek Šimík (Karlsuniversität Prag): “Factors affecting word order in Slavic languages”
Slavic languages have a so-called free or flexible word order, i.e., the word order is not determined only by the syntactic factors (such as sentence function - subject vs. object, etc.), but also, and arguably primarily so, by extra-syntactic factors. Some of these factors are grammatical in the broader sense of the word (case, thematic role, quantifier scope, sentence mood), others are pragmatic (esp. information-structure-related, e.g. focus, topic, givenness) and yet others prosodic (non-final position of prosodically weak elements, including clitics). In the lecture, I will illustrate how the abovementioned factors influence word order and we will also consider the mutual relation between the factors. Finally, I will show a number of empirical studies (corpus, experimental) which provide more rigorous evidence about the word order effect of some of the factors.

Kit Grigoleit (Universität Leipzig): “Mismatches in Slavic L-preterit”
There is cross-Slavic variation in whether the L-preterit consists of a simple or a complex verb form as L-preterit auxiliaries seem to be bound to the main verb in some contexts and discontinuous from it in others. In this talk I investigate the properties of the Czech L-preterit. I propose a phasal analysis in which the Czech L-preterit is morpho-syntactically simple yet prosodically complex to account for the Czech auxiliary being bound to the main verb in VP-ellipsis but able to dislocate to the second position of a clause later at PF, building on Fried (1994) and Adam (2024). The analysis presented in this talk derives (i) the morpho-syntactic features of the Czech L-preterit, (ii) the domains of VP-ellipsis and verb periphrasis through the same phase boundary and (iii) the process ordering of VP-ellipsis and cliticization. I conclude with the possible expansion of the insights from Czech to other Slavic L-preterit verb forms.

Asya Shteyn: “The concept sphere of Soviet and post-Soviet literature textbooks”
In this talk, I will introduce my research-in-progress, which was started at GEI Institute Braunschweig in January-March. The research explores the the concept sphere of Soviet and post-Soviet literature textbooks. Soviet, and after them, Russian educational ideologists have always operated under the assumption that the main task of literature was civic and patriotic education. Post-Soviet societies continue to be literature-centered, and the slightest political and social changes are reflected in school literature programmes. However, it is not only the choice of works to read (the so-called school canon) that influences students, but also the words used to describe them. These words interact with each other to form a concept: abstract idea that serves as a foundation for more concrete principles, thoughts, and beliefs, which is undoubtedly the most important aim of any ideology. This has remained mostly unexplored. For the purpose of the study, groups of lexemes associated with social groups in Russia during the first third of the 19th century were selected. Then a quantitative count and qualitative (cognitive) analysis of lexemes in all forms and contexts was carried out. In all textbooks, the key concept under discussion was 'народ': it is mentioned most often in various contexts and forms, and it forms the largest number of lexical and semantic connections. Due to homonymy, the concept 'народ' is vague and encompasses several notions: 'folk', who are the authors of folklore texts; 'nation', which is a unity united by a common language, territory and culture; and 'peasants', who are the opposite of the aristocracy. These notions are intertwined, forming a single concept. The concept 'народ' is the fundamental concept within the concept sphere. The conceptual framework of the notion of народ indicates a transition from an encyclopaedic to a mythological domain. The populace is frequently divested of subjectivity; they are the object of external forces, both sympathetic and hostile. In contrast to the Soviet textbooks, which portray the populace as the driving force behind the revolution, post-Soviet textbooks, they are the custodians of religious spirituality. It may be posited that pro-church ideology is beginning to supplant Soviet revolutionary ideology. The study confirmed my initial hypothesis about the influence of the language used in school textbooks on students' minds. It came out that the key concept in all textbooks, from the earliest Soviet ones to the most modern ones, was «народ» (‘the people.’) which, according to the authors of textbooks, is the main subject worthy of depiction in Russian literature.

Jana Hoffmannová (Akademie der Wissenschaften der Tschechischen Republik): "Genus in Sprache und Kommunikation (Genderlinguistik und die tschechische Sprache) / Rod v jazyce a komunikaci (Genderová lingvistika a čeština)“
ABSTRACT:

ABSTRACT:

ABSTRACT:

ABSTRACT:
Women in Ukrainian Dictionaries: Updates to the WDUF and UDEW
(DAAD “Future Ukraine” Project)
This lecture highlights recent updates to two important lexicographic resources: the Web Dictionary of Ukrainian Feminine Personal Nouns (WDUF) and the Ukrainian-German Dictionary (UDEW). As part of the DAAD "Future Ukraine" project, the WDUF was expanded with 1,000 new entries, while the UDEW integrated the WDUF’s first-edition register.
The presentation explores thematic groups of feminine terms, with a focus on legal and military domains. For legal terms, a multifaceted approach combines corpus dynamics, cross-corpus studies, and Frame-Based Terminology Analysis to create an ontology of legal feminine terms in Ukrainian. This method analyzes media representation of feminine terms over two decades, explores cross-corpus usage trends, evaluates their standardization in legal contexts, and develops frame-based definitional templates to enhance the WDUF.
For military terms, the analysis incorporates a decolonial perspective by contrasting Soviet-era dictionaries with contemporary usage, revealing shifts in gendered language norms. This approach includes a comparative study of feminine and masculinized titles for women in media and provides insights into decolonizing the Ukrainian linguistic standard.
This research not only updates the Web Dictionary but also establishes strategies for advancing the standardization of feminine terms in Ukrainian. The lecture offers a unique view into the intersection of lexicography, corpus linguistics, and decolonial studies.

Prof. Dr. Katrin Bente Karl (Universität Bern): “Mehrsprachigkeit: Was beeinflusst narrative Strukturen? Einblicke in eine kontrastive Studie zu mono- und bilingualen Sprachdaten von russisch-, polnisch- und deutschsprachigen Personen”
ABSTRACT:

Olena Synchak (Ukrainische Katholische Universität, Lviv): “Ukrainian Feminine Personal Nouns: from social demand to codification”
Ministerka ‘(female) minister’, dotsentka ‘(female) associate professor’, naukovytsia ‘(female) researcher’, politykynia ‘(female) politician’, and other similar words cause a heated debate in Ukrainian society, even though other words with identical suffixes – sekretarka ‘(female) secretary’, prybyralnytsia ‘(female) cleaner’, kravchynia ‘seamstress’, are so familiar that they surprise no one. During this lecture, we will delve into the captivating discourse surrounding the use of feminine terms within modern Ukrainian language.
In contemporary Ukrainian language, feminine personal nouns rank second in word formation frequency, only trailing behind borrowings from English. Despite this prominence, the perception of these terms within the linguistic community and society remains polarized. While some consider them an "artificial intervention" disrupting the language's natural flow (A. Arkhanhelska), others hail them as a "revival of Ukrainian identity and originality" (O. Styshov). We will navigate these contrasting viewpoints amidst a notable surge in the prevalence of such terms, particularly following the significant events post-2014, including the Revolution of Dignity, the occupation of Crimea and Donbass, and the full-scale invasion of Russia in 2022. Corpus data solidly supports the correlation between the rise of feminine terms and profound social changes amid unprovoked aggression.
This lecture will delve into the efforts to standardize feminine personal nouns in modern Ukrainian and the tangible or perceived obstacles along this journey. A pivotal focus will be the exploration of their codification within the Web Dictionary of Feminine Personal Nouns (published on the dictionary portal r2u.org.ua in early 2022), unraveling the guiding principles shaping their inclusion. Leveraging experiences from compiling this dictionary, we will offer recommendations aimed at standardization of feminine terms in explanatory or translation dictionaries.
Prepare for an engaging discussion that dissects the complexities, challenges, and potential avenues for codifying feminine terms in modern Ukrainian. Beyond linguistic analysis, this exploration will offer insights into the societal perspective on women and the activity of the women's rights movement—an integral aspect influencing the perception of feminine terms within Ukrainian society.

Solomija Buk (Nationale Iwan-Franko-Universität Lviv): “Corpus, Lexicographic, and Statistical Dimensions of Long Prose Fiction”
The study іs devoted to the search for strategіes of complex system corpus lexіcographіc and statіstіcal lіnguіstіc descrіptіon of the author’s іdіolect, to the creatіon of a methodology for revealіng the quantіtatіve specіfіcіty of Franko’s texts as a necessary component of іts qualіtatіve descrіptіon.
Text corpus of Іvan Franko’s long prose fіctіon was buіlt as a multіfunctіonal resource for studyіng the vocabulary, morphology, semantіcs, text structure and other aspects. 9 frequency dіctіonarіes of all Ukraіnіan language works of thіs group of texts by Іvan Franko were compіled. The prіncіples of quantіtatіve parameterіzatіon of the mentіoned works are substantіated and іmplemented іn practіce, they demonstrate the іnternal dіfferentіatіon of the works of one wrіter. A complete lіst of the Franko’s long prose fіctіon vocabulary was made. Іt has 506 722 tokents and 26 368 types wіth the dіsambіgualіzed homonymy. The fundamental parameters of the statіstіcal structure at the lexіcal level were іdentіfіed and descrіbed for dіrect and author’s speech: text and lexeme vocabulary volumes, the rіchness of the vocabulary (іndex of varіety), the amount of hapax legomena, theіr occupatіon of text and vocabulary, exclusіveness іndex for text and vocabulary, amount of words іn text wіth frequency 10 and hіgher, theіr occupatіon of text and vocabulary, concentratіon іndexes for text and vocabulary. The іmportant sіmіlarіtіes and dіfferences were found. The new statіstіcal parameter for the wrіter’s language and style іs offered. Іt іs percentage ratіo of hapax legomena and frequently used lemmas. These characterіstіcs helped to find out and to descrіbe more precіsely the іmportant features of author’s style.
The statіstіcal morphologіcal characterіstіcs were calculated: the number of each part of speech іn the dіctіonary and text, theіr quantіtatіve ratіo, the іndex of epіthetіzatіon, the іndex of verb atrіbutes, the nomіnalіsatіon іndex. The ratіo of dіrect and author’s speech іs revealed, іt іs proposed to consіder the іndex of dіalogіcіty as an oblіgatory dіstіnctіve feature of the wrіter’s іdіolect, as for each of these textual forms of narratіon statіstіcal lіnguіstіc parameters dіffer both quantіtatіvely and qualіtatіvely. The determіnatіve features of the statіstіcal lіnguіstіc model of Franko’s іdіolect are detected іn the comparіson wіth the Ukraіnіan long prose fіctіon іn general. Thіs model has explanatory potencіal and can be used for a complex and systematіc study of the other wrіters works.
Applіcatіon of the іnterdіscіplіnar approaches shawed the fact that the language and speech laws and dependences whіch are іnherent іn other semіotіc systems, have there orіgіnal features іn the іmplemantatіon on the dіsscussed materіal.
Keywords: Text corpus, statіstіcal parameters of text (speech) and language (vocabulary), frequency dіctіonary, lemmatіzatіon, morphologіcal annotatіon of the text corpus, semantіcal annotatіon of the textcorpus, parts of speech, dіrect speech, author speech, long prose fіctіon, Іvan Franko, Ukraіnіan.

The talk focuses on age studies’ contribution to literary scholarship as well as the importance of research of the representations of late adulthood in drama which combines the theatrical art and literary genre. Ukrainian modernist drama of fin de siècle develops the intergenerational conflicts from a new perspective. Older motherly characters in some of Lesya Ukrainka’s versified dramas (In the Wilderness, The Noblewoman, Forest Song) are analyzed through the prism of dichotomy of patriarchal/modernist mindsets. Collapse of patriarchal family is indicative in Volodymyr Vynnychenko’s and Mykola Kulish’s dramas of the period.
