Sophia Cosby

Doctoral Candidate

I received my undergraduate degree in German and English Literature from the University of Edinburgh in 2014 and my graduate degree in fashion journalism from the University of the Arts London in 2017. Prior to beginning my PhD at the Institute for American Studies at Leipzig University, I gained professional experience outside of academia, predominantly in the technology sector, which I now balance alongside my doctoral research. My research project aims to investigate the ambivalent relationship that Americans have towards the wealthy as represented in literary texts that spotlight the miseries and suffering of the upper classes. Generally I am interested in exploring how literary texts reflect cultural sentiments about class, social mobility and inequality in contemporary US society.
