By going abroad, you can expand your academic, linguistic, and cultural horizons. There are various programmes and funding opportunities to support you in this endeavour. Erasmus+ is one of them. The programme provides an opportunity to spend several months studying abroad within Europe. You can apply for a subject-specific study placement through the Institute of British Studies. On this page we inform you about the general conditions and application modalities as well as about our partner institutions and the respective project managers at our institute.

This section is directed at outgoing exchange students. For information regarding incoming exchange students, please see the page “Exchange students”.

About Erasmus+

Erasmus+ supports study periods abroad, of between two and twelve months, at partner universities in Europe. Erasmus students are not required to pay tuition fees at the partner university they attend. Your study placement will be funded depending on the duration of your stay and the target country. You can find more detailed information on this on the International Centre’s website.

Any questions you may have regarding recognition of study abroad undertaken by teacher training students are answered on the information sheet provided by Saxony’s State Office for Schools and Education (in German).

Your written application for the Erasmus programme at the Institute of British Studies should include:

  • Brief information about yourself (application form)
  • A short CV in tabular form
  • Your study abroad aims (not only in general terms but also in relation to the specific content and the chosen university; it is not obligatory to mention your second choice here)
  • Information on course achievements to date, in the form of an official transcript of grades (no screenshots, if possible only for studies in English/American studies, not second subjects/electives [apart from for teacher training students]) or a copy of your BA certificate.
If you do not yet have any module grades at the time of your application, you can submit them subsequently until the end of March. In this case, you should include a copy of your Abitur certificate.

With the exception of the application form itself, your application should be in English. Your application can only be processed if you submit all application documents in full. Applications are to be made by 31 January as an email attachment to Dr Dietmar Böhnke at the Institute of British Studies (erasmus.anglistik[at]uni-leipzig.de).

  • By January: Research host universities, write your application (application form, tabular CV in English, aims/letter of motivation in English, proof of grades)
  • 31 January: End of the application period for the coming academic year (winter and summer semester), final date for submitting your full application (as an email attachment) to Dr Böhnke.
  • Around the beginning/middle of April: Allocation of places for the Institute of British Studies (you will be informed). At this stage, you should quickly contact the relevant Erasmus contact person at the institute.
  • By around the end of May (for the summer semester, this can also be later), allocation of remaining places
  • May (or Sept/Oct): Application to, or registration with, the host university
  • September (or January/February): Start of study abroad

English Studies students who need to provide proof of language proficiency for their application for an exchange place at a partner university should submit this form and a current transcript of records by email to Jolene Mathieson. You do not need a language certificate for the places offered by our institute.

Students of other disciplines please follow the instructions of the International Centre.

We recommend that you complete your study abroad in the second or third year of your bachelor’s degree or teacher training programme.
